Setting the standard for remote pilotage

Welcome

Setting the standard
for remote maritime pilotage

The Remote Pilotage MVP project investigates, defines and tests a Remote Pilotage solution that can be industrialized globally.

The seven work packages of Remote Pilotage MVP Project

Defining the Remote Pilotage Service

In WP1 Novia aims to define and design the Remote Pilotage Service. The goal is to define the remote pilotage service at such a level that it is possible to implement it globally without major investments in new technology or infrastructure.

Remote Pilotage Solution

In WP2, Novia focuses on defining and developing the minimum viable product (MVP) for the remote pilotage solution, which can serve as a basis for standardization.

Ship Data

Brighthouse works in WP3 to ensure that the necessary ship information will be easily available to create the remote pilot´s situational awareness.

Remote Pilotage Operating Centre

With Kongsberg’s lead WP4 aims to combine ship data and fairway information to define, develop, and test the Remote Pilotage ROC (Remote Operations Center) working environment.

Shared Situation Awareness

In WP5, Groke Technologies leads the research to identify critical elements and define solutions to create shared situational awareness (SA) between the remote pilot and the bridge crew.

Fairway Information and Services

In WP 6 partners work toward seeking solutions to ensure seamless cooperation between the ship’s crew, remote pilot, and VTS operators. Fintraffic’s vessel traffic service (VTS) is the lead partner in WP6.

System Level Testing and Demonstration

Furuno leads the work in WP 7 to ensure the practical integration of subsystems.

Visions of Remote Pilotage as seen in the MVP project

Remote piloting offers the same service quality as traditional piloting, adhering to the same legal frameworks. In remote piloting, the pilot acts as an advisor to the ship’s captain and a local expert from an onshore location. We propose that remote piloting can be provided with at least the same level of safety as traditional piloting, given that the following conditions are met.

ESL Shipping: Loaded with Nordic know-how

ESL Shipping's geared vessels are especially designed to operate in the demanding conditions of the Baltic Sea. The ice-strengthened and relatively shallow-draft ships are able to load and unload vessels at sea. ESL Shipping contributes to the project by...
